The latest competitions organised by Med Golf proved very successful for Andy Griffin and Neil Emmerson, as they both booked their places for the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama in November, alongside previous event winners Louis Calvente, Denny To, Nicky Sanchez, Russ Crawford and Frank Samways.

The Lagos course at Mijas was the venue for the competition held on the 30th April, where over 50 golfers competed for the Volvo Marbella trophy, on a perfect sunny day for golf. In what turned out to be a very close finish, Andy Griffin took the sponsor’s trophy and the coveted invitation to Valderrama, with Jeff Richardson in second place and Dan Kenyon third. Jeff also took the top senior prize and is now one of the front-runners for the “senior player of the year” title, which also carries a Valderrama invitation.

Amongst the many other prizewinners, Julie Brewer was the top lady, young Josh Jones was the “star quality” winner, Fred and Philip Bootsma the “top team”, with Bill Aldridge having the longest drive. The best round of the day went to Dan Aldridge with a superb 74, and he also won a nearest the pin prize along with Andy Griffin, Russ Crawford, Barry Coelho and Ian Griffiths.

Almenara was the next Med Golf venue, where again on the 14th May there was an excellent turnout for the Johnnie Walker Trophy, sponsored by Saccone and Speed. Taking the sponsor’s trophy and the Valderrama invitation this time was Neil Emmerson, with Josh Jones in second place and Dan Kenyon in third. Neil also won the top team prize with his partner, Mark Crossley, and Dan the prize for the best round of the day. Top lady was Una Mac, with the top senior being Roy Azzopardi.

The “star quality” award went to John McHale, and George Desoiza had the longest drive. Winners of the par 3 competitions were Steve Parry, Julie Burgess, Dan Aldridge, Tom Rooney, Neil Emmerson and Bill Aldridge.

For all those Med Golf members who are still looking for that Valderrama invitation, the next competition is the Gala Casino Trophy on the championship course at Montecastillio over the weekend commencing 16th June, where Med Golf have organised a few days break in the luxurious 5-star hotel. Non-golfers and children are welcome. This is followed by the Smarties Bar (Woodhall Spa) Trophy at Santana on Sunday 2nd July.

To book your tee times for Santana or get further details of the Montecastillio event, where there are still a few spaces left, you should ring Johnathan Goodson on (0034) 639741886. He will also be able to give you all the Med Golf special golfing offers and the full tournament schedule.

Along the Costa del Sol there are now over 50 courses for golfers to choose from, and the province could see up to 30 new courses develop in the next ten years. With this in mind and so that local and visiting golfers can take advantage of all that is on offer in the area, Med Golf run their own membership scheme in conjunction with these courses. On production of a membership card, substantial green fee discounts are available to Med Golf members; full details on how to join are on the website, www.teetimespain.comm Why don’t you become a member and save every time you play?
